My perioperative nursing career spans more than 30 years. I first set foot inside an operating theatre during my second year as a student nurse and I was hooked, though it took me a while and a move to another continent to return to the specialty. Having undertaken general and midwifery training in England, I decided that nursing qualifications were my passport to the world, so I took the big step and migrated to Australia in 1976. Fate took a hand in my employment and when I applied for my first job, it was at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane and the only available job was in the operating theatre! Some great experiences there re affirmed for me that the operating theatre was my career path. It also fired my desire to pursue further studies in the specialty, so I travelled to Sydney to undertake a Post Basic Theatre Course at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

I also really enjoyed teaching and so combined this with my passion for perioperative nursing and applied for a job in education at Westmead Hospital, eventually finding my niche in the operating theatre as the Nurse Educator. After a few years I had the opportunity to work at the then NSW College of Nursing (now Australian College of Nursing) developing and coordinating the first Post Graduate Perioperative Certificate run by distance education in Australia and continued in this role for the next ten years. This role took me all over rural  NSW visiting students in their own perioperative environments which was a real eye opener for me. It is always wonderful to meet up with these nurses many years down the track at conferences and a great source of pride to hear about the changes they have made to their practices as a result of their studies.  More recently I have been working at Randwick Campus Operating Suite in the role of Clinical Nurse Consultant, combining this with developing the consultancy business with Sally.

Professionally, I have been an active member of the NSW Operating Theatre Association (NSWOTA) for many years which has included many roles, including two terms as President. I have represented NSW on the ACORN Board, a great experience to collaborate on a number of projects, including the ACORN Competency Working Party.

In 2004 I was honoured to receive the inaugural ACORN Excellence in Perioperative Nursing Award and equally honoured, in 2012, to present the Judith Cornell Oration at ACORN Conference in Darwin.

I have published journal articles and presented Conference papers both in Australia and overseas. One of my most satisfying achievements has been as co-editor and contributor to ‘Perioperative Nursing: An Introductory Text’ published in 2009.

When Sally first floated the idea of forming the consultancy, I was very excited at the prospect of continuing our collaboration which had started through our work as CNCs. I am ready for the new challenges and achievements that Health Education & Learning Partnerships will bring.
